Our three-year biomedicine degree is for those with a broad interest in human life processes and disease. lancaster university is ranked fourth in the uk for biosciences in the guardian university guide 2020 and is in the top ten in the uk for biological sciences in the times and sunday times good university guide 2020. the bsc biomedicine offers more flexibility than our ibms-accredited bsc biomedical science by allowing you to tailor your degree to your personal and professional interests within the field of biomedicine. you will study biochemistry, cell biology, genetics and physiology - which are at the heart of modern medical and health research. these subjects are taught with a particular emphasis on the molecules and mechanisms fundamental to life processes and how these are disrupted by disease.

Students will reflect on their learning in a professional context. they will critically reflect on work based learning theory and practice and provide an in depth review of their own, and others', experiences. consideration will be given to ethical issues arising on placement and identification and analysis of implications of informal and formal learning in the workplace. finally, students will elaborate on their future career aims and areas for development.

Lancaster university is ranked first in the north west - and third in the uk - for graduate prospects by the times and sunday times good university guide 2020 and the complete university guide 2020. our ibms accredited bsc biomedical science is a path to employment as a biomedical scientist in the nhs. the degree can also open up research-based careers in the biochemistry of human diseases and conditions, as well as in biomedicine. in addition to the nhs, there are many opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry, with recent graduates employed by glaxo smithkline and alcontrol laboratories. 100% of lancaster’s biomedical science graduates are in work or further study six months after graduating, 70% of those in employment are in professional or managerial positions (unistats 2019). the transferable skills and analytical training you will gain during your biomedical science degree will allow you to enter science or diverse fields such as management, marketing and finance. you will gain practical skills such as laboratory competence and experimental design; numerical skills such as statistical analysis, data recording and presentation; and interpersonal skills such as team working, communication and negotiation. lancaster university is dedicated to ensuring you not only gain a highly reputable degree, you also graduate with the relevant life and work based skills. we are unique in that every student is eligible to participate in the lancaster award which offers you the opportunity to complete key activities such as work experience, employability awareness, career development, campus community and social development

Work while you study

You can also work on a UK student visa, from 10 to 20 hours per week during the academic year, 40 hours per week or full-time during vacations.
