The joint honours ba english and philosophy course route is distinctive because of its richly interdisciplinary approach to key ethical and intellectual challenges. ba english and philosophy is a popular joint honours combination which brings together two subjects with highly complementary approaches and interests. as well as offering a balance of core and option units rooted in each of the two subjects, this course has been designed so that your growing knowledge and skills in each subject will help you develop a distinctive perspective and distinctive strengths in the other. you will have opportunities to study abroad and, if you wish, can take your third year as a placement – in britain or abroad. in your final year, you will have a chance to explore your interests in depth with a substantial piece of project work that presents a thesis, building on the knowledge and skills you've been developing over previous years. the english and philosophy subject groups are staffed by internationally renowned writers and academics, and there’s a strong research culture, creating a learning environment that is both supportive and intellectually challenging. we pride ourselves on our excellent teaching and highly positive student feedback. and with our extensive cultural links both in manchester and further afield, you are in the right place to begin building a network for your future. philosophy at manchester metropolitan is a centre of internationally recognised research, covering the history of philosophy, critical social theories, philosophy of art, metaphysics philosophy of education, history and philosophy of science, and much more. we pride ourselves on covering anglo-american and continental european philosophy, and many of our research-active staff are regularly invited to give keynote papers at international conferences and workshops. our teaching is research-led, so you can be sure you’re learning from experts at the forefront of various philosophical disciplines.

Studying a joint honours degree gives you the rich and unique opportunity to improve your employability by developing skills and knowledge in two subjects. we’ll equip you with the vital tools and techniques to effectively combine literary theory with philosophy so that you can positively influence others and play a leading role in driving progressive change. this course will help you to develop the ability to think critically, analyse ideas and interpret texts and discourses, and articulate the conclusions reached. these skills are transferable to a wide range of careers, including roles in research, teaching, business and management, public administration, community and social work, publishing, research and teaching, journalism and media work. there is also the opportunity to engage in further study and professional training, for example some of our graduates go on to study ma english studies at postgraduate level where you have the opportunity to build your own bespoke masters experience, reflecting your interests in the further study of english, or ma philosophy, which focuses on a rich and varied tradition of philosophical theory across anglo-american and the continental european traditions.

Work while you study

You can also work on a UK student visa, from 10 to 20 hours per week during the academic year, 40 hours per week or full-time during vacations.
