Course Overview

Linguistics is a popular course taken on its own or in combination with english, tesol or a modern language. it is devoted to the scientific study of natural language and concerned with how languages are acquired, structured and applied. this programme offers a sound knowledge of both theoretical and applied perspectives. the core topics include syntax, semantics and pragmatics, forensic linguistics, sociolinguistics, and phonetics and phonology, as well as media and intercultural communication. critical thinking and argumentation are transferable skills that are valuable in the job market and sought after by all employers. if you take spanish as a major or equal subject you will have the opportunity to spend your third year abroad in spain or latin america. if spanish is your minor subject, the course will be three years with no period of residence abroad. you will also have the option to study spanish from beginners level.

Careers may include working as a market research professional, customer support advisor, events organiser, teacher, translator or cultural briefing consultant. expanding areas for linguists include digital subtitling, dubbing and website localising. graduates of this degree may also opt to proceed to postgraduate study in one of the sub-branches of linguistics. recent graduates have gained employment in banking, local government, cultural relations, education, manufacturing and importing. there is also the opportunity to engage in further study and professional training, for example some of our graduates go on to study ma applied linguistics (with specialisms in english language and tesol) and ma teaching english to speakers of other languages (tesol) and applied linguistics - distance learning, which will equip you with the valuable communication skills needed to work in culturally diverse environments. taught by research-active academics, all of our courses will equip you with the valuable communication skills needed to work in culturally diverse environments.

Work while you study

You can also work on a UK student visa, from 10 to 20 hours per week during the academic year, 40 hours per week or full-time during vacations.
