Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Tesol) and Linguistics

Our ba (hons) tesol and linguistics gives you the professional skills and academic knowledge to teach english around the world. this programmes are designed to offer deep critical, theoretical and practical understandings of theories and approaches to teach english in a multilingual world. in addition, you will be equipped with advanced linguistic knowledge about language use, structure and variation in order to prepare you for the practical challenges and excitements of teaching english to speakers of other languages. you will learn how to tailor your language teaching approaches depending on learners’ needs, how to design specialised teaching materials to cater for specific contexts and how to engage with debates about social and ideological issues in english language education.

A language-focused degree allows you to learn many transferable skills that can be used in a multitude of jobs. teaching, translation and interpreting are popular pathways, but languages graduates are also sought after in many different industries, with recent graduates being offered positions in a variety of different sectors both in the uk and abroad. there is also the opportunity to engage in further study and professional training, for example some of our graduates go on to study ma applied linguistics (with specialisms in english language and tesol) and ma teaching english to speakers of other languages (tesol) and applied linguistics - distance learning, which will equip you with the valuable communication skills needed to work in culturally diverse environments. taught by research-active academics, all of our courses will equip you with the valuable communication skills needed to work in culturally diverse environments.

Work while you study

You can also work on a UK student visa, from 10 to 20 hours per week during the academic year, 40 hours per week or full-time during vacations.
