Explore the complex relationship between the worlds of media, communication and international development on this fascinating degree. you’ll examine the role of tv and social media in the way we engage with politics and humanitarian crises, and how charities and other development organisations communicate with the public about famine, poverty, migration, and other global issues. this variant of the course also gives you the chance to undertake a placement on an overseas development project, giving you professional experience and allowing you to put what you’ve learned into practice abroad. our ba media and international development with overseas placement is ranked in the top 20 for communication and media studies by 'the complete university guide 2022'.

You’ll have the chance to put what you’ve learned into practice and get hands-on professional experience through the development work placement module. you’ll spend two to six months working abroad on a development project in your third year. past students have worked with inter press service in new york, video volunteers in goa, british red cross in london, and wateraid in madagascar, malawi and london. during your placement you’ll gain valuable insights and practical experience in a different country and culture. you’ll also have the chance to develop personal skills employers welcome.

You’ll graduate with knowledge and skills valued by a vast range of organisations related to international development. these include government agencies such as the united nations, private sector companies, consultancy firms, and the many hundreds of large and small non-government organisations that focus on development and humanitarian work. some of our alumni are working for organisations such as stonewall, women’s aid and public media alliance. many of our alumni have also gone to work in the media. recent graduates have become freelance film-makers, photographers and travel writers and even set up their own production companies. you could pursue numerous career paths combining both media and international development such as ngo communications, development journalism, humanitarian communication, marketing and media development. or you could use the academic and transferable skills gained from our degrees for careers in business, the voluntary and public sector, education, and academia. you will also be perfectly equipped to continue your studies with a masters degree across a wide range of fields such as international development, international politics, media and communication, journalism studies, and beyond. career destinations career destinations related to your degree include: charities and ngos development journalism international organisations media organisations marketing and communications travel writer
You can also work on a UK student visa, from 10 to 20 hours per week during the academic year, 40 hours per week or full-time during vacations.
